Description
Enzyme Blend
The plant-based enzymes used in this formula provide digestive capability over a wider pH range than animal enzymes and aid with digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fibre.
The carbohydrate digesting enzymes include alpha-galactosidase, which helps break down fermentable carbohydrates, such as beans, resulting in a reduction in flatulence.
Digestion of dietary proteins is aided by papain, which also helps digestion of the gliadin components of gluten (so enhancing tolerance to gluten in the diet). As well as helping protein digestion, the inclusion ofbromelain may also prevent the adherence of detrimental bacteria to the lining of the small intestine.
Cellulose, which is present in leafy green vegetables such as brussels sprouts and cabbage, is a dietary fibre which cannot be digested by humans. By including cellulase in the complex, the breakdown of fibrous foods is enhanced.
Cumin (Cuminum cyminum): Used traditionally to help alleviate intestinal cramps, cumin may also protect the colon from carcinogens by decreasing the activity of beta glucuronidase and mucinase.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare): Fennel contains a compound called anethole which has been found to reduce smooth muscle spasm and therefore may be supportive for irritable bowel syndrome. Research also suggests that fennel has a protective effect on gastric mucosal lesions.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): Traditionally used for intestinal irritation, ulcers and spasms, research has also found that chamomile, in combination with apple pectin, resolves acute diarrhoea. The compounds chamazulene and bisabolol within chamomile can reduce inflammation. Chamomile also exerts anxiolytic activity (there is a well-established link between anxiety and digestive problems).
Ginger (Zingiber officinale): As well as being protective for the stomach lining, ginger reduces gastric emptying time and may increase the secretion of bile from the gallbladder thereby supporting fat digestion.
Anise (Pimpinella anisum): Anise has antioxidant properties that may help prevent gastric ulcers by supporting gastric mucosal lining. Used traditionally to reduce flatulence.
