Pharmacological Action
Polyphenols such as flavanols, flavandiols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids are abundant in green tea. Flavanols including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC), are all referred to as catechins. These seem to be responsible for many of the proposed benefits of green tea. EGCG’s anti-inflammatory effects seems to be due to the inhibition of certain inflammatory cytokines. EGCG has demonstrated antioxidant properties. Research has shown a positive correlation between green tea consumption and attenuation of liver disease. With other research indicating that green tea may act protectively against disorders of the liver.
