More about MSM

MSM is an abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane, an organic form of sulphur. It is the form in which sulphur appears in nature in all living organisms and in which it is biologically active. MSM is an odourless, white, crystalline powder that is highly soluble in hot water and in a wide range of organic solvents.  Biologically, active sulphur has incredible preventive and therapeutic properties.  The medicinal properties of biological sulphur are profound.  Because of these characteristics, the discovery of biological sulphur’s role in health and the process that has enabled its successful delivery in a supplemental form are considered amongst the biggest advances in orthomolecular medicine in the second half of this century.

MSM delivers sulphur to the body in a useable way. Sulphur helps maintain the structure of connective tissue by forming cross-linkages through disulphide bonds, i.e. sulphur strengthens the tissues that make up joints. Sulphur is critical to good joint health.

MSM contains a large amount of sulphur – 34% in weight. While more research is needed to determine how the body absorbs the sulphur it needs from MSM, preliminary studies in animals suggest that the sulphur in MSM is incorporated into proteins and into joint tissues.

 

Insufficient  MSM in our bodies has been linked to unspecified complaints of fatigue, depression, high sensitivity to physical and psychological stress and with a large number of degenerative diseases. MSM is an important source of sulphur but also has unique properties related to its chemical structure and biological activities.
