Cinnamomum Zeylanicum.. Family Lauracea

Distribution:
Native to Madagascar, Comores, South India and Burma.

Description of plant:
An exotic rust coloured tree which can get to thirty feet in nature, but is kept down to six feet for commercial reasons. It has shiny, leathery green leaves, small white flowers and bluish-white berries.

Description

Extraction:
Steam Distillation of the leaves and twigs.

Charactersitics:
A brownish-yellow oil of somewhat harsh, clove-like, warm-spicy-odour.

Avoid during pregnancy. High doses could cause convulsions.

Cinnamyl acetate – 1%
Beta-caryophyllene – 4%
Cinnamaldehyde, methyl vanillin – 5%
Alpha Pinene, p-cymene – 1%
Geraniol, borneol, linalool, terpineol – 2%
Eugenol, safrole, aceteugenol – 86%

Properties and indications:
MIND
For exhausted states and feelings of weakness and depression.
BODY
A tonic for the respiratory tract, its warming action helps colds and flu. Eases breathing difficulties and restores senses during fainting fits. Stimulates tears, saliva and mucous. Good for intestinal infections. Calms spasms of digestive tract, dyspepsia, colitis, flatulence, gastralgia, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting. Used in the past against cholera and typhoid. Used to ease period pain. Reputedly effective against impotence. Has a tonic effect on the circulatory system, and may ease painful rheumatic joints.
