Artichoke extract (standardised to contains 30 % Luteolin)	100mg

Pharmacological Action

Luteolin is reported to be an active component of artichoke that reduces hepatic cholesterol synthesis by indirect inhibition of the HMGCoA-reductase enzyme in animal studies. Human studies show a modest reduction in total cholesterol of approximately 18 % after 6 weeks of use. Beta-sitosterol has multiple mechanisms of action: It lowers cholesterol levels by interfering with the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and increasing bile acid secretion. Another mechanism for this effect demonstrated during in vitro studies, is the inhibition of sterol-reductase, an essential enzyme in the process of cholesterol biosynthesis. Beta-sitosterol may interfere with the uptake of micellar cholesterol leading to decreased plasma membrane cholesterol influx and cholesteryl ester secretion. Data indicates that dietary plant sterols disrupt cholesterol homeostasis by affecting two critical regulatory pathways of lipid metabolism. It has been suggested that plant sterols limit cholesterol ester availability in cells leading to increased degradation of apoB100 (in HepG2 liver cells) and apoB48 (in Caco2 intestinal cells). This would result in the decreased production of VLDL from the liver and chylomicrons from the intestine, precursors of LDL-C and chylomicron remnants, respectively. Beta-sitosterol significantly reduces total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, but has little or no effect on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels.
